DIY Hand Soap: Non-Toxic & Super Effective!

img_0498

In this previous post, I shared the dangers of using antibacterial hand sanitizer and the benefits of making your own along with a super simple DIY formula.

In this post, I’m hooking you up with a similar DIY recipe for hand soap that’s also non-toxic and extremely effective.

Not only will this recipe help detox your personal care routine, it’ll also save you tons of money in the long run.

Plus, you can use the same soap bottle over and over = less waste. SCORE!

DIY HAND SOAP FORMULA

Equipment:

Ingredients:

*There are many carrier oils to choose from including argan oil, avocado oil, fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil and sweet almond oil. You can find all of these and more here on Plant Therapy’s website under the “Body Care” section. You can also buy them here on amazon.com. I prefer coconut oil for my DIY soap.

Directions:

  1. Add the water and liquid castile soap to the glass soap bottle.
  2. Add the carrier oil, vitamin E oil and essential oils to the bottle. (A small stainless steel funnel like this makes this process MUCH easier!)
  3. Screw the top on tightly, shake well and use.

There’s something so satisfying about being able to whip up your own personal care goods and knowing EXACTLY what’s in them.

Plus, this DIY hand soap makes an excellent gift! As detailed below, you can customize the scents to make several different formulas to give out to family and friends.

WHICH ESSENTIAL OILS SHOULD I USE?

If you’re new to essential oils and want to learn more about them, click here to read my “Essential Oils 101” blog.

As I explain in this blog, my go-to brand of essential oils is Plant Therapy. They offer every type of essential oil you need to make an outstanding hand soap.

For the DIY formula above, you can use 20 drops of the same essential oil or you can create a special blend. Below are some recommendations.

  Single Oils

If you want to stick with a single oil / scent, the following essential oils have powerful antibacterial properties while also having a pleasant smell:

  • Peppermint
  • Lavender
  • Bergamot
  • Lemongrass
  • Clove

Click here to grab any of these oils from Plant Therapy’s website. Shipping and returns are FREE on all orders!!!

  Pre-Made Blend

Plant Therapy offers a pre-made blend called “Germ Fighter” that’s super effective and smells delicious (it’s sold under the “Synergies” section of the website).

They also offer a blend that’s formulated specifically for kids ages 2-10 called “Germ Destroyer” (it’s sold under the “KidSafe” section). Click here to check these blends out!

They also works great for diffusing in your home, especially during cold and flu season!

  DIY Blends

You can make your own germ-destroying blend for your hand sanitizer, while also fulfilling a health or emotional need at the same time. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Alpine Blend (Smells like Christmas!): 2 drops of Fir Needle, 2 drops of Peppermint & 1 drop of Vanilla
  • Focus Blend: 2 drops of Cedarwood Himalayan, 1 drop of Frankincense Carteri, 1 drop of Sandalwood & 1 drop of Vetiver
  • Goodbye Allergy Blend:  2 drops of Lavender, 2 drops of Lemon & 1 drop of Peppermint
  • Happy Blend: 1 drop each of Bergamot, Grapefruit, Lemon, Sweet Orange & Vanilla
  • Immune Boosting Blend: 1 drop each of Clove, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Sweet Orange & Rosemary

Click here to grab any of these oils from Plant Therapy’s website. Shipping and returns are FREE on all orders!!!

PREFER TO BUY OVER DIY?

If you’d rather buy a pre-made hand soap versus making your own, I get it. There are only so many hours in the day.

The good news is there are some great non-toxic options on the market.

My favorite line of natural hand soaps is A La Maison, which you can find here on amazon.com. They are made in France simply with filtered water, coconut oil, olive oil, natural vegetable glycerin, argan oil, vitamin E (tocopherol) and plant extracts/essential oils.

They smell amazing and are very moisturizing…so moisturizing that I use them as body wash, too!

Dr. Bronner’s is another good non-toxic line, which you can find here on amazon. You can also check out Puracy.

Cheers to effectively cleaning your hands and strengthening your health at the same time!

With love and gratitude,

Kandi
