DIY Insect Repellent: Toxin-Free & Super Effective!

You know how there’s that one person in every group who gets eaten alive by mosquitos during outdoor festivities when it’s hot and humid? Yeah, that’s me.

Or that person who bugs instinctively flock to like a moth to a flame? That’s also me.

It sucks. (Pun intended)

What sucks even more is spending my money on toxic bug sprays that contaminate my body and don’t even work to keep the bugs away.

So I set out to find a natural DIY recipe that would preserve my health and actually keep the pests at bay. Guess what?

I found it, and I’m super excited to share it with you!

THE DIY FORMULA

To make this awesome insect repellent, you’ll want to invest in an 8-ounce glass spray bottle. It’s important to use glass, because the essential oils in this recipe can break plastic down. Plus, glass is nontoxic.

You may be able to find glass spray bottles in local stores. If not, there are loads of great options on amazon – click HERE to check them out.

You’ll get to use the same bottle over and over and over again = less waste. SCORE!

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of witch hazel
  • 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 40 drops of essential oils (I prefer the Plant Therapy brand) – mix of citronella, eucalyptus, lemongrass, rosemary and tea tree

NOTE: Plant Therapy offers pre-made oil blends (synergies) that are specifically formulated for repelling bugs. Their “Nature Shield” synergy is for people aged 10 and up. Their “Shield Me” synergy is part of their KidSafe line, which is made for kids ages 2-10.

Preparation:

  1. Pour all the ingredients in a glass 8-oz. spray bottle and shake well.
  2. Spray the mixture over your body, being careful to avoid your mouth and eyes.

NOTE: Shake the bottle well before each use.

If you’d like to copy my super fancy method for labelling my DIY bug spray, all you need is some masking tap and a marker. Easy peasy!

Cheers to enjoying a pest-free outdoor experience that’s also free of toxins!

With love and gratitude,

Kandi
