20 Essential Oils for Natural Air Purification

When it’s cold outside, we seal our homes up and run the heat to stay warm.

When it’s hot outside, we seal our homes up and run the air conditioning to stay cool.

Whenever we seal the space up around us, we’re basically trapping ourselves in a box of recycled air (like in an airplane cabin). The absence of fresh air in your home results in poor air quality that’s full of pollutants. The same goes for your car and office.

This is a big deal, since it’s estimated that people spend more than 90% of their time indoors!

Fortunately, it’s easy to cleanse, purify and refresh the air around you with the natural magic of essential oils.

Creating a Purification Blend for Maximum Effect

To get the best purification effect, you’ll want to use a blend of air purifying essential oils.

I like creating blends using an oil from each of the following groups for a balanced scent: Citrus Group: Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Sweet Orange, Tangerine

Citrus Group: Grapefruit, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Sweet Orange, Tangerine

Leafy / Herbal Group: Balsam Fir, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Helichrysum, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Oregano, Peppermint, Pine, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Wintergreen

Resinous / Earthy Group: Frankincense, Myrrh

Here are some blends to help get you started:

Balanced Blend #1

  • Lemon
  • Eucalyptus
  • Frankincense

Balanced Blend #2

  • Sweet Orange
  • Balsam Fir
  • Myrrh

Balanced Blend #3

  • Grapefruit
  • Peppermint
  • Frankincense

If you really like citrus scents, it’s totally okay to create an all-citrus blend like this:

  • Lemongrass
  • Lime
  • Sweet Orange

Or maybe you love citrus and leafy/herbal scents, but you don’t care for resinous/earthy smells. That’s okay, too. In that case, you could use a blend like this:

  • Tangerine
  • Lime
  • Lavender

How To Use These Oil Blends to Purify the Air

You have two easy options for diffusing essential oils into the air of your home, car and office:

1) DIFFUSE THEM

To diffuse essential oils, simply add water and the correct amount of essential oils (detailed below) to the diffuser and start it up.

When diffusing essential oils, it’s important to use a diffuser like this that uses ultrasonic vibrations to break the oils up into a fine mist. This allows the oils to remain suspended in the atmosphere for hours to treat the air around you for an extended period of time.

When using a diffuser, the number of drops you’ll use depends on the size of the diffuser and how strong you want the scent to be. Here are some general guidelines:

  • 100 ml capacity diffuser = 3-5 drops
  • 200 ml capacity diffuser = 6-10 drops
  • 300 ml capacity diffuser = 9-15 drops
  • 400 ml capacity diffuser = 12-20 drops
  • 500 ml capacity diffuser = 15-25 drops
  • 600 ml capacity diffuser = 18-30 drops

2) SPRAY THEM

Simply fill a 2-oz. glass spray bottle (like this) with water, add 10 drops of essential oil, shake and spray into the air. Be sure to shake the bottle well before each use.

Each batch of spray should be used within 30 days, so bacteria doesn’t grow in the water. If you think you’ll go beyond the 30 days, you can keep the spray in the fridge to help prevent any bacteria growth.

These sprays work great for throwing in your bag to take on the go! They also make awesome gifts.

And the beauty of the glass spray bottle is you can use it over and over and over again. I love saving money and reducing waste at the same time!
