DIY Lipstick/Lip Balm That’s 100% Natural & Free of Toxins

I came out of the womb loving makeup and started playing with my mom’s makeup bag as soon as I was able to reach it. My love for brightening my face and expressing myself with makeup still burns strong.

My desire to keep toxins off my body to preserve my health and well-being, however, has become much stronger.

I was horrified when I started to learn about all the toxic chemicals, synthetic fragrances and preservatives that are packed into most commercial cosmetic products. It’s scary!

If you want to know more, you can access loads of eye-opening research through the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Database.

Here’s just one example:

Studies show that up to 75% of lipsticks on the market today contain lead. GULP! Over time, this gradual consumption of lead-infused lipstick can lead to an abundance of heavy metals in your system.

This is a big deal, because heavy metal toxicity lends itself to a host of health issues in the human body like autoimmune diseases and organ damage. I don’t know about you, but I’m not okay with that!

Good news!

DIY lipstick is pretty simple to make…and this is coming from someone who detested chemistry class and does not enjoy spending time on DIY projects one bit.

I’m wearing one of my DIY lipsticks in the photo above.

I’m excited to share the simple recipe with you below to show you just how easy it is.

The most difficult part is making sure you have all the ingredients on-hand. To make that part super simple, I’ve hooked you up with links to where you can score the goods right on amazon so you don’t have to spend time wandering around specialty stores to find them.

Not only is this DIY recipe completely free of toxins, it will also leave your lips moisturized, nourished and healthy. SCORE!

Base Ingredients

Coloring Ingredients

Preparation

  1. Put an inch of water in a sauce pan and warm the water over medium heat.
  2. Set a glass jar or glass measuring cup like this inside the saucepan to create a double boiler.
  3. Put the wax in the glass jar or measuring cup first and let it melt.
  4. Once the wax is melted, mix in the carrier oil.
  5. Once the wax and carrier oil are blended well, add the butter and stir everything together as it liquifies.
  6. Lastly, stir in the coloring ingredients to achieve your desired shade.
  7. If you’re adding essential oils for scent and nourishment, remove the jar from the heat and quickly stir in a couple drops of the chosen essential oil.
  8. Immediately pour the liquid mixture into your chosen containers and let them cool. (These stainless steel funnels are very helpful for this step!)
  9. Enjoy your homemade, nourishing, non-toxic lipstick!

A NOTE ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS: I highly recommend Plant Therapy essential oils. They are high-quality oils with a very reasonable price tag, and they have a KidSafe line specifically formulate for kids age 2-10. You can buy them HERE directly from the Plant Therapy website (shipping is FREE!) or HERE through amazon.

NOTE: All of the coloring ingredients linked to above are organic, food grade powders that can also be used in your kitchen to rock your healthy diet!

+Use the beet powder to add a pretty red/pink color and a bit more sweetness to your healthy baked goods.

+Sprinkle some cinnamon on your fruit or in your coffee.

+Put cacao powder in your oatmeal, coffee or healthy brownies for a chocolatey flare.

+Add turmeric (a powerful inflammation fighter) to your scrambled eggs, sautéed veggies or as a rub on grilled meat.

You can also use these powders to make additional DIY cosmetics like blush, eye shadow and foundation powder. You will definitely get your money’s worth by buying these organic food-grade powders!

CLEAR LIP BALM

Do you prefer clear, colorless lip balm? No problem! To make this nourishing lip balm without any color, simply use the base ingredients and don’t add any coloring components.

MAKE IT FUN!

Play with the coloring ingredients to come up with a variety of fun and unique colors. You can even give them your own personalized name. For example, I made a reddish color and named it “Kandi Kane.”

Making this DIY lipstick is a fun activity to do with kids on a rainy day, or for events like a birthday party or Girl Scouts meeting. It’s also something fun to try with a group of besties during girls’ night in!

Another perk of this DIY lipstick is that it eliminates the heartbreak that ensues when a cosmetic line discontinues your favorite color. Now, you are the lipstick maker and can whip up a batch with your own customized color whenever you want!
